Here, birth becomes anything but a solitary venture or one shared within
a couple. Instead, as a result of Chicago’s expressive and multichromatic
rendering, it is an explosive cosmic event in which the female body melds with
the earth—indeed it creates the earth and vice versa. It is as epic as The
Creation of Adam, but in Chicago’s retelling, instead of spiritual
transcendence, we see the material, physical realities of creation.
