With its floral and penetrative motifs and the expectancy of “almost,”
the silkscreen Almost Born is reminiscent of Chicago’s erotica,
suggesting thereby a unique pleasure in a process found so unworthy of
elevation by male artists. The womb is as much a biological or anatomical
entity as it is an abstract, beautiful form, not unlike Anna Atkins’s floral
photograms or Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s quilt-like abstractions.
