Love Story is a
powerful and enduring image that combines violent imagery with text,
specifically a passage from Pauline Réage’s erotic novel The Story of O from 1954. The role of pornography in feminism would rage throughout the late
1970s into the present, and it is clear that Chicago has always been a
sex-positive feminist. Yet here, slightly before porn became a fraught talking
point for feminists, she also questions the implications of sexual media made
for the consumption of men and characterized by the brutalization of women.
