Marie Antoinette is a
beautiful and exemplary print from Chicago’s Great Ladies series from
1973, which, predicting The Dinner Party, depicts famous women as
abstracted, vulvic fields of color alongside text. Chicago’s handwriting that
frames the image reads, “Marie Antoinette—during her reign women artists
enjoyed great success. But the French Revolution—which brought democracy to men—caused
women artists to lose their status while the Queen lost her head.” It is more
crucial than ever to remember how often social progress for the majority often comes
at the expense of others.
